Thaedros Subclasses

Warlock: Pact of the Whisperer

Warlocks bound to enigmatic entities that emerged from the spaces between worlds during the Diaspora.

Warlock: Pact of the Whisperer

Since people arrived on Thaedros from Encara, from the moment the worldgates closed, the Whispers began. Reaching out to those with a spark of magic, or a desire for knowledge, secrets, and power. You have answered that call, but where will it lead? And what will it cost?

The source of these whispers remains uncertain. Some believe they hear the dreams of sleeping gods—Encara's divine beings who fled the Hungering Multitude's infection but could not be fully cleansed. Others suspect the whispers are the Multitude itself, speaking through the cracks between worlds. A few theorize the voices belong to something older still, entities that existed in the void before the Essari ever opened their doomed gates.

Whatever the truth, one thing is certain: the Whisperer offers knowledge, power, and secrets that should perhaps remain buried. Those who accept this pact walk a narrow line between enlightenment and madness, never quite sure if they're being guided or consumed.

Unique Subclass: The Pact of the Whisperer is singular. There has only ever been one warlock with this pact throughout Thaedros' history. If a player chooses this subclass, they are that warlock—the only individual their patron has ever chosen to contact. They will never encounter another Whisperer warlock, past or present. This exclusivity is fundamental to the patron's nature and should not be changed.

Subclass Features

3rd Level: Whispering Patron Spells

Your patron's influence grants you access to additional spells. When you reach a Warlock level specified in the Whispering Patron Spells table, you thereafter always have the listed spells prepared.

Whispering Patron Spells

Warlock LevelSpells
3Dissonant Whispers, Detect Thoughts, Phantasmal Force, Silent Image, Suggestion
5Major Image, Speak with Dead
7Arcane Eye, Greater Invisibility
9Dream, Modify Memory

3rd Level: Whispered Revelations

The voice of your patron fills your mind with fragments of forgotten knowledge. You gain proficiency in one of the following skills: Arcana, History, or Insight.

Additionally, you can cast comprehend languages at will without expending a spell slot.

Once per short or long rest, you can invoke your patron's whispers to gain insight into a person, place, or object you can see within 30 feet. This functions as the identify spell, but also reveals if the target has any hidden magical properties, curses, or Essari origins.

6th Level: Eldritch Echo

Your connection to the Whispering Patron allows you to project your presence unnaturally. As a bonus action, you can send a spectral echo of yourself up to 30 feet away. This echo lasts for 1 minute, until you dismiss it, or until you use this ability again.

  • You can cast spells as if you were in the echo's location
  • If an enemy enters the echo's space, it must make a Wisdom saving throw against your spell save DC or be frightened of you until the end of its next turn

You can use this ability a number of times equal to your Charisma modifier (minimum of once) per long rest.

10th Level: Secrets of the Forgotten

Your patron reveals a sliver of the ancient knowledge hidden within Thaedros. When you finish a long rest, choose one of the following effects:

  • Veil of the Lost: You gain temporary immunity to divination magic, including effects like detect thoughts, scrying, or zone of truth.
  • Resonance of the Old World: When you use identify or legend lore on an Essari artifact or location, you receive visions of its past and gain advantage on Investigation and History checks related to it.
  • Stolen Power: When you cast a spell that forces a creature to make a saving throw, you can give one target disadvantage on their save if that creature has failed a saving throw against any of your spells or abilities within the past hour. You can use this once per long rest.

14th Level: Voice of the Veiled

The whispers of your patron can overwhelm the minds of others. As an action, you can force a creature within 60 feet that can hear you to make a Wisdom saving throw. On a failed save, choose one of the following effects:

  • Revelation: The target involuntarily speaks a crucial hidden truth, secret, or suppressed memory that they know. The DM determines what is revealed.
  • Confusion: The target is affected as though by the confusion spell for 1 minute. They can repeat the saving throw at the end of each of their turns, ending the effect on a success.
  • Possession: Your patron speaks through the creature for up to 1 minute. The target remains aware but cannot control what they say. You can ask your patron questions through the possessed creature, and the patron may answer (at the DM's discretion).

Once you use this feature, you cannot use it again until you finish a long rest unless you expend a Pact Magic spell slot to use it again.
