The Hauktenlach were not always a people of peace. Long ago, their ancestors were warlords, expanding their influence with conquest and steel. For centuries, their warriors were feared, and their empire seemed unstoppable—until they committed an atrocity so great that it shattered their very identity. The name of the people they eradicated is lost to history, but the horror of that act remained, a wound too deep to ignore. In time, many among them cast aside their weapons in shame, vowing never to return to the path of war.
This vow did not come without struggle. The transition from a militant society to one of contemplation was long and bloody, but ultimately, peace won. Those who embraced pacifism turned their once-martial discipline inward, developing philosophies that sought balance between action and restraint, purpose and passion, destruction and creation. This philosophy became their way of life, and over time, the Hauktenlach came to be known as seekers of wisdom, masters of inner discipline, and unparalleled artisans.
Since the diaspora, the Hauktenlach have adapted to Thaedros much as they did in the past—by embracing change, rather than fighting against it. While they have no grand ambitions of conquest or expansion, they have flourished in Yldan and beyond, producing some of the most renowned scholars, sculptors, and meditative warriors in the land. Their martial traditions persist, but now as a form of self-discipline, expressed through elegant, efficient combat techniques honed for defense rather than aggression.
A Hauktenlach monastery can be found in nearly every major settlement, offering refuge, healing, and wisdom to those who seek it. Though many find their ways inscrutable—especially their refusal to fight unless absolutely necessary—their presence is respected, for they have shown time and again that a calm mind and a steady hand can shape the world as surely as any sword.
And, of course, they remain gnomes at heart. While their humor is quieter and their curiosity more measured, they still delight in small joys, whether that be a well-steeped tea, a beautifully crafted work of art, or a particularly elegant prank.
